About Rio Carnival
Rio Carnival dates back to the 1700s, when Portuguese settlers introduced the Roman Catholic tradition of indulging in a final day of revelry before abstaining in the run-up to Easter. Today the world-famous festival is a five-day extravaganza, starting just before Lent and ending on Shrove Tuesday.
Millions of people take to the streets during the summertime celebrations, as Rio is transformed into a euphoric whirl of costumed party-goers. Street bands perform at more than 500 open-air parties throughout the city and along Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches.
