CESSNA CITATION V

CESSNA CITATION V

  • Passengers 8

With its speed, large cabin and reputation for comfort, performance and reliability, the Cessna Citation V is a popular choice for short- to mid-range charter flights.

About this aircraft

  • The Citation V is a stretched version of the Citation II with more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5A turbofan engines.
  • The aircraft was certified in 1988 and deliveries began the following year.
  • The Citation V usually accommodates seven or eight passengers, with an extra seat in the rear enclosed lavatory if needed.
  • The sizable baggage hold can fit seven suitcases and three golf bags.
  • The Citation V can fly non-stop from New York to Miami and London to Milan.
  • Over 250 of the aircraft were delivered until production stopped in 1994, with the release of the upgraded Citation V Ultra.

The Citation V kickstarted an incredibly successful family of Cessna private jets. The Citation V, Citation V Ultra, Citation Encore and Citation Encore+ accounted for over 750 deliveries from 1989 to 2011 and are the largest straight-wing members of the family.

Interior design

The Cessna Citation V’s spacious interior features extra-wide seats that recline 60 degrees and rotate a full 360 degrees.

Cessna wanted the quietest possible cabin and the aircraft’s soundproofing techniques and triple-glazed windows have stood the test of time. Other notable features include two-zone temperature control and a ventilation system designed to eliminate drafts.

The Citation V can be configured for seven passengers, with club-four seating flanked by two forward-facing seats in the rear and one at the front. In some configurations, two smaller seats are positioned at the front facing the cabin door, increasing the maximum capacity to eight passengers. The enclosed lavatory can also be used as an extra seat if required.

The cabin is undeniably spacious, especially compared to its competitors, while the aircraft’s external and internal storage space can accommodate seven suitcases and three golf bags.

Below are two standard configurations found on the Cessna Citation V.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • Due to the Citation V’s length, its cabin and baggage hold are among the largest in the light jet category.
  • Newer Cessna aircraft like the Citation Encore+ and Citation Latitude are great choices if you’re looking to charter a more modern light jet.

Technological features

The Cessna Citation V is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5A engines with an hourly fuel burn of 182 gallons per hour. The flight deck, originally centred around a Dual Collins ProLine avionics system, is designed to provide pilots with the information they need for a reliable and efficient flight.

Domestic internet ensures productivity while travelling. Passengers can control their environment via the cabin management system, which allows access to digital media, individual interactive moving maps and satellite radio.

History

A pre-production prototype of the Citation V flew in early 1986 and the first engineering prototype made its maiden flight in August 1987. The aircraft was announced at the NBAA convention later that year, with US certification granted in December 1988 and deliveries commencing the following April. The Citation V proved popular, with over 250 built through to mid-1994, before production switched to the modernised Ultra.

Manufacturer

Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.

Cost

A pre-owned Cessna Citation V costs around $800,000 to $850,000 (USD).
