DFB Pokal History
In 1935, Germany held its first annual football cup competition, named the Tschammer Pokal, which was won by FC Nürnberg. The tournament was suspended during the Second World War and returned in 1952-3 as the DFB Pokal, named after the German Football Association (Deutscher Fussball-Bund) that organises the competition. Today, the DFB Pokal has become one of the most important titles in German football and features the top teams in the country. Since 1985, the final has been held in Berlin’s 74,000-seat Olympiastadion.
So how does the DFB Pokal work? The top 36 teams from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga automatically qualify, as do the top four teams from league three. The last 24 slots are awarded to the best teams from regional football associations, producing a mix of amateur and professional competitors who play each other in knock-out rounds. Every year, this results in exciting ‘Giant Killings’, where a professional team is beaten by an amateur one. Even Bayern Munich, the tournament’s most successful team with 18 titles, has been knocked out three times by amateur teams in the first round.
2017 DFB Pokal Schedule
The 2016-17 Pokal tournament began on the 19th August and moves into the semi-final round in April. The top ‘Giant Killer’ this season was third-division team Sportfreunde Lotte, who knocked out top league teams Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen but lost out on a semi-final place when they were beaten by Borussia Dortmund. That means Borussia will play Bayern Munich again in the semi-finals, after losing to them 4-3 during penalties in last year’s final. Here’s the schedule for the remaining matches in the 2017 DFB Pokal:
- Semi final 1: Bayern Munich VS Borussia Dortmund on the 25th April at 20.30. The match will be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, just 15 minutes from Munich International Airport.
- Semi final 2: Borussia Mönchengladbach VS Eintracht Frankfurt on the 25th April at 20.30. The match takes place at Borussia-Park and the closest airport to the stadium is Dusseldorf International Airport.
- Pokal final: the two winning teams from the semi finals will play each other on the 27th May at 20.00 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
The winning team will receive automatic qualification for the UEFA Europa Cup in 2017-18 and will host the DFL-Supercup at the beginning of next season.
