The 67th annual Sanremo Music Festival, or Festival di Sanremo in Italian, is one of the most highly-anticipated events in Europe’s music calendar. The singing competition features a mix of famous and unknown artists performing brand new songs live for the first time. The public and a special judging panel vote to decide the winner, who will go on to represent Italy in the 2017 Eurovision song contest.
As usual, the Sanremo Music Festival will be held at the city’s grand Teatro Ariston in Liguria, Italy. This year 20 singers will compete over five nights from the 7th to the 11th February. The show’s artistic director Carlo Conti and iconic TV presenter Maria De Filippi are hosting the contest and full coverage will be broadcast live by RAI to millions of TV viewers.
Contestants are split into two categories: famous singers and newcomers. The Big Artists section this year includes top Italian singing sensations Gigi D’Alessio, Fiorella Mannoia and Ermal Meta. A fun Cover Night will take place on the third evening of the festival, where artists will perform new versions of well-known Italian hits.
The Sanremo red carpet is always filled with celebrities and socialites. Special International guests set to attend this year include Mika, Ricky Martin, and the Brit Award winner Rag’n’Bone Man who recently received a platinum disc in Italy for his hit single ‘Human’.
Italy’s most popular music contest dates back to 1951 and was created to revitalise the economy and boost the country’s reputation after World War II. The first edition was held in the Sanremo Casino, featured just three participants, and was broadcast on RAI radio. Today, the Sanremo Music Festival is considered a cherished Italian tradition and one of the country’s most important cultural events.
Sanremo was the inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest and has launched the music careers of many Italian superstars. In recent years, it has catapulted Eros Ramazzotti and Laura Pausini to world-wide singing success. International guests clamour to attend the Sanremo Music Festival; Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Bruce Springsteen, and Gwen Stefani have all graced the red carpet in previous years.
