74th Venice International Film Festival
Palazzo del Cinema and other locations at the Venice Lido
Date: 30 August-9 September 2017
A central part of Venice Biennale, Venice Film Festival has been running since 1932, making it the oldest film festival in the world. This 11-day event celebrates the best in world cinema and aims to raise awareness and create dialogue, drawing film critics, actors and paparazzi from around the world. Film screenings take place at Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido at the Lungomare Marconi, a beautiful waterfront location.
This year’s president of jury is American actress Annette Bening, making the 74th Venice Film Festival extra special, as there has not been a female president since 2006. Another exciting development for 2017 is the launch of Venice Virtual Reality, a new competition category in which up to 18 world-premiere virtual reality films will be entered.
The idea to hold a film festival in Venice was originally conceived by Count Giuseppe Volpi, president of the Biennale, with the first film festival taking place from 6th-21st August 1932 at the Hotel Excelsior, Venice Lido. The first film to be shown at Venice Film Festival was Rouben Mamoulian’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The most prestigious awards are the Golden Lion, awarded to the best film and the Grand Jury Prize, generally considered the second place award. The Silver Lion award is given to the best director and there are also awards for the best actress and actor each year, known as the Volpi Cups. Each year, film buffs eagerly await the announcement of the opening film which will premiere at Venice Film Festival – last year's opening film La La Land went on to win five Oscars. The lineup for this year will be announced on the 27th July, at the official press conference in Rome.

57th International Art Exhibition (La Biennale Arte)
Giardini, Arsenale, and various locations throughout Venice
First opened in 1895, La Biennale Arte has grown from a small showcase of Italian art to the most important event on the art world’s calendar. Each of the participating nations, expected to be more than 80 in this iteration, selects an artist to install an exhibit on the nation’s behalf. The majority of the exhibition takes place in the Giardini, a lavish French garden left in Venice by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Arsenale, a beautifully restored complex of former shipyards and armories dating back to the 12th century. In recent years, exhibits have outgrown their original venues and taken up residence in various locations throughout Venice’s historic city center. For more information, visit the official website.
The special preview day is on 9th May, followed by the vernissage, or preview, which runs from 10th to 12th May. The awards ceremony and official opening date is 13th May. The Giardini and Arsenale are closed on most Mondays.
