While in this fascinating city, you’ll enjoy a private tai chi lesson at the Temple of Heaven before touring the Old City’s winding alleyways, exploring traditional hutong communities and visiting the home of a local family.
You’ll visit the Forbidden City palace complex where 24 emperors ruled during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, enjoying a private tour of the exquisitely furnished Chong Hua Gong halls, before strolling around fabled Tiananmen Square. The highlight of your time in Beijing is a Champagne toast on the iconic Great Wall of China, one of the world’s most magnificent man-made wonders, overlooking sensational views of the surrounding countryside. Afterwards, enjoy a private boat ride at the Summer Palace, a tranquil lakeside retreat where emperors once holidayed.
Xi’an: Discover the legendary Terracotta Warriors
Take a private charter from Beijing to Xi’an, one of China’s oldest cities, which is renowned for its ancient sites. You’ll spend a night at the Sofitel Legend People's Grand Xi’an, a luxury hotel located at the heart of the city. While here, you’ll visit the 7th-century Big Wild Goose Pagoda and impressive City Wall, before walking through the Muslim Quarter to the Great Mosque – a symbol of the little-known influence of Islam on Chinese culture. This beautiful religious centre is China’s largest mosque and features on the UNESCO Islamic Heritage List.
Your stay in Xi’an includes a visit to the Terracotta Warriors, an extraordinary collection of thousands of life-size sculptures depicting the armies of the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. One of the world’s most famous archaeological discoveries, the silent troops were uncovered by accident in 1974.
Visit a famous Chinese poet’s home
Take a private jet to Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province, for a two-night stay at The Temple House, a luxurious holistic retreat that beautifully blends ancient and contemporary architecture. Here you’ll visit the Wu Hou Monastery, which dates back to the 3rd Century and contains 47 statues of Shuhan civil and military officials along with other historic relics.
You’ll tour Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, where famous Chinese poet Du Fu penned over 200 poems which are now recognised as realist poetry masterpieces; and enjoy a lively evening at a Face Changing Show, a 300-year-old art form which sees performers seamlessly and swiftly change expression using silk masks, face powders and paint.
Discover bubbling springs and lush parkland
Travel by private charter to Lìjiāng, prized for its maze of cobbled streets, wooden buildings and peaceful canals, where you’ll spend two nights at Amandayan – an intimate hilltop hideaway perched beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Tour the fairytale Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 800 years, which features an intricate system of waterways and bridges.
Explore former Naxi capital Baisha, visiting the clinic of famous Chinese Medicine practitioner Dr Ho; and another local village, Longquan, where you’ll find a 500-year-old stone bridge. You’ll also enjoy a trip to Black Dragon Pool Park, a stunning retreat where lush parkland and ornate pavilions and bridges complement an idyllic pond fed by bubbling mountain springs; and the Dongba Museum, where you can peruse Naxi religious artefacts and a rare pictographic script.
Admire dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge
Take an overland transfer to Zhongdian, now known as Shangri-La, a scenic Tibetan town in the Himalayas perched at an altitude of 3,300m. Explore Shigu, a charming Naxi village that boasts two historic sites. Then admire First Bend in the Yangzi River, a beautiful natural landmark where the river makes an almost 180-degree turn from southeast to northeast, and the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of Asia’s deepest natural formations.
Visit the 17th-century Songzhanling Monastery, built under direction of the fifth Dalai Lama, where you’ll meet a living Buddha – a monk who has become a Buddhist doctor. Then it’s on to the Old Town with its winding cobblestone alleyways and smoke-charred shrines, where you’ll learn how to print scriptures using traditional techniques and visit a Tibetan family who will teach you to make yark butter tea. Head to Ringha Village, where timber houses dot a flowering meadow, where you can hang ‘pray flags’ for good luck at the local monastery.
