DORNIER D328 JET ENVOY

  • Passengers 15

The Dornier 328JET (also known as the Fairchild Dornier 328JET) is a spacious heavy jet that’s ideal for large business and leisure trips.

About this aircraft

  • Originally released as a turboprop-powered aircraft in 1991, the turbofan-based Dornier 328JET was certified in 1999.
  • The executive version of the Dornier 328JET typically seats up to 15 passengers, while the commercial version can seat up to 32.
  • With 15 passengers onboard, the Dornier 328JET can fly nonstop from London to Ibiza or New York to Atlanta.
  • The Dornier 328JET’s huge exterior baggage space has room for 30 suitcases.
  • Production ended when owner AvCraft went into administration in 2005.

With its quiet cabin, huge baggage hold and well-equipped galley and entertainment system, the Dornier 328JET is ideal for large parties and corporate incentive trips.

Interior design

There’s plenty of room to move around in the Dornier 328JET’s spacious cabin. The commercial layout is similar to a standard short- or mid-haul commercial airliner, with a 2-1 seat configuration throughout; while the executive layout features two four-seat club formations followed by six or seven forward-facing seats in the rear.

There’s a large enclosed lavatory at the back and a well-appointed galley at the front. Modern corporate interiors typically have power outlets, USB sockets, in-flight entertainment and video monitors, coffee machines, air conditioning and full refreshment centres.

Below is a typical executive configuration found on a Dornier 328JET.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • While the Dornier 328JET is classed as a heavy jet, its large cabin, lavatory and baggage capacity give it the feeling of a much larger executive airliner or bizjet.

Technological features

The Dornier 328JET’s 6,050 thrust-pound Pratt and Whitney Canada PW306B engines are far more powerful than the nacelle-shrouded turboprops found in the original variant.

The cockpit is fitted with integrated Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics, including a flight management system, dual PRIMUS II integrated radio system, dual integrated avionics computer, automatic flight control system, dual digital air data reference unit, dual altitude and heading reference system, PRIMUS 650 weather radar, mode S transponder, fault recording, traffic alert and collision avoidance system and ground proximity warning system.

History

The turboprop-powered Dornier 328 launched in the early 1990s. Realising prospective customers were concerned about the noise levels and reliability of its engines, Dornier began developing a turbofan-based variant, which was initially referred to as the 328-300.

Using the turboprop-powered 328’s frame to speed up production, the 328JET featured Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306 turbofan engines, strengthened landing gear and brakes, Honeywell Primus 2000 EFIS avionics and an APU as standard. The first prototype rolled out in December 1997, with certification following in July 1999.

Manufacturer

Dornier Flugzeugwerke was founded in 1914 by German aviation designer Claude Dornier. Between the two World Wars, the company became well-known for manufacturing large, all-metal flying boats and land-based airliners.

With aircraft production forbidden in Germany after WWII, Dornier relocated to Spain and Switzerland before returning to Germany in 1954. Over the next few decades, the company re-established itself with a string of successful aircraft, including the STOL DO 27, STOL DO 28 and Dornier 228 utility planes.

Fairchild took over an 80% stake in Dornier in June 1996 and development of the 328JET began soon after. Fairchild Dornier was declared insolvent in July 2002, with US company Avcraft acquiring the rights to the 328JET before going into administration itself in 2005.

Cost

Depending on factors like age and condition, the price of a used Dornier 328JET ranges from $11-13 million (USD).
