DESTINATION GUIDE

Kastellorizo

Private jet charter and flights to Kastellorizo

Closer to Turkey’s beautiful Turquoise Coast than its nearest Greek neighbour, Kastellorizo is not your typical fly-and-flop holiday destination. Its only town is set around a picture-perfect harbour and the rocky coast rises steeply out of the azure Mediterranean. The phrase “the best things come in small packages” was created for this island.

The island’s sole town, Megísti (or Kastellorizo Town), overlooks a stunning natural harbour on the island’s eastern coast at the very edge of Europe. The waterline is lined with tall, slender homes – some white-washed and some strikingly vibrant – backed by towering limestone cliffs that create a natural amphitheatre. Lose a few hours wandering along the quiet cobbled streets, perhaps stopping at a seafood restaurant followed by a waterfront taverna or two. You may be only a mile or so from Turkey, but it’s hard to forget you’re in Greece. A smaller harbour to the east is overlooked by the Mandraki neighbourhood and boasts one of the island’s few beaches, a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling.

With fewer than 500 residents and just a handful of hotels, it never feels too crowded here but there’s plenty to do. To uncover the island’s past, visit the ruins of Kastello Rosso, a hilltop 14th-century castle that the island is named after. It’s quite a climb to the top of the red-rock hill, but you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the yacht-scattered harbour, nearby islets and Turkish coast. Other historic attractions include the archaeological museum, the 4th-century Lycian Tomb (requires a steep climb) and the elaborate Church of St Constantine and Helen. West of Megísti is the island’s oldest landmark, Palaiokastro; the remains of an ancient citadel.

To explore beautiful natural landscapes, take a morning boat trip to swim inside the Blue Cave, a vast cathedral-like grotto adorned with picturesque stalactites and stalagmites; or explore Ro and Strongyli, two tiny islands with no permanent residents.

Due to its small size, the number of hotels on the island is limited and rooms can fill up well in advance, particularly during the summer months. There’s just one airport, which is located 10 minutes from town. Simply contact our team and we’ll arrange everything you need to charter a private jet to Kastellorizo.
