GULFSTREAM II

GULFSTREAM II

  • Passengers 12

Setting the standard for luxury and convenience in its time, the Gulfstream II (G-II) is a transcontinental business jet offering speed, performance and comfort.

About this aircraft

  • Certified in 1967, the Gulfstream II was launched by American manufacturer Grumman, who based the aircraft on the turboprop-powered Gulfstream I.
  • The original Gulfstream II can connect cities like New York and Los Angeles or London and Istanbul, while the G-IIB variant has an even longer range.
  • The G-II can seat 10-12 passengers, with an additional seat in the enclosed lavatory if required.
  • The baggage hold has space for around 14 suitcases and is accessible via the lavatory during a flight.
  • Over 250 G-IIs had been built when deliveries ended in 1980, with more than 40 aircraft transformed into the longer-range Gulfstream G-IIB.
  • Gulfstream released the upgraded Gulfstream III in 1979.

Although the Gulfstream II is older than most heavy jets in circulation, it’s a comfortable charter aircraft. Its large cabin is a similar size to the newer Gulfstream IV and larger than some long-range private jets available today.

Interior design

The Gulfstream II’s stand-up cabin is among the largest in its class, even compared with newer models. There’s a range of configurations that can accommodate 10-12 passengers.

There’s plenty of space onboard for four club seats, four seats in a conference grouping with a table, and a divan or two. A galley can be found at the front of the aircraft, while the enclosed lavatory is located aft of the passenger seats.

Below are some typical configurations found on a Gulfstream II.

Interesting facts to know before you fly

  • Gulfstream’s large, oval signature windows flood the cabin with natural light and are positioned so you can see the world below from the comfort of your seat.
  • A longer-range variant of the aircraft, the G-IIB (a G-II retrofitted with the G-III wing), can fly further than the original.
  • Another variant, the G-IITT, features the G-III wing and tip tanks (additional fuel tanks attached to the ends of the wings).
  • Unless fitted with ‘hush-kits’, the original aircraft can’t operate at airports with stringent noise restrictions.

Technological features

The G-II is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey Mk 511-8 turbofan engines, each producing 11,400 lbs of thrust.

The Gulfstream II was initially designed with analog communication and navigation radios and vintage electromechanical instrument displays, however various parts have been upgraded over the years. Common installations feature the SPZ-800 flight control system supplied by Honeywell, including the Sperry SP-50G autopilot and dual Honeywell Laser Inertial Navigation System.

History

The Gulfstream II was announced by Grumman in 1965 as a turbofan-powered replacement for the Gulfstream I turboprop. The new model retained the original Gulfstream’s large fuselage cross-section, while changes included an entirely new swept wing and a pair of Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans mounted on pylons just ahead of an all-new T-tail.

The revolutionary aircraft was certified in 1967 and stood alone in its class for many years, offering transcontinental range at quick speeds and the only stand-up cabin in a business jet.

In 1976, wing tip-tanks were added to boost the aircraft’s fuel capacity and range. Tip-tanks were later incorporated into the Gulfstream III, along with new winglets, upgraded landing gear, increased gross weight and hush kits. These improvements can also be found in the limited run of G-IIBs.

Manufacturer

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation is an American aircraft company based in Savannah, Georgia and a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The company originated in the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. developed a twin-turboprop business aircraft called the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I) at its facilities in Bethpage, New York.

Gulfstream now designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services the latest business jet aircraft and has produced more than 2,000 aircraft since 1958.

Cost

Used Gulfstream IIs can be purchased for as little as $1.5 million (USD), with the average price around $2.7 million.
